I went to St Galls from 1970 til 1977 and they were the best days of my life, i lived on Theresa Street opposite the Dunville Park and it was a short walk to school everyday up both Waterford and Clonard Streets. I clearly remember my class teacher who was a mr Lyons with curly hair and a moustache to match, then there was mr Lecky and mr McCartan, i've got vivid memories of Bro Leopold. Those were the day's and they will live with me forever!

I attend St Gall’s primary school in the 1970’s. I can say it was the most enjoyable and memorable time of my school life. I met some charters and friends, as did we all. My only regret is we all lost contact as our schools lives moved on. Br. Leopold was a gentleman among pupils and I was privileged to know him. He along with Tommy Macken changed my educational path for which I am forever grateful. Tommy Macken went on to teach in Zambia and if he ever reads this I hope he would get in contact as IOU him drink and a chat.

If any pupils of the 70’s are arranging a reunion count me in!!!!!

1978-1985 first Mrs Cartan, Miss Cullen & then Lecky ( I remember the crosswords too). Absolutely brilliant, will never forget it or anyone there. Still have the team photo from the 85 'B' Championship Final against St. Colmans at Casement, will stay with me forever.

Was at St Galls from 1984-1991. Brings back a lot of memories looking at the site. Mrs Carton was my first teacher there, and Mr Lecky my last. I remember the weekly crosswords well... football on a Thursday and the trip to the Falls Baths for football, hockey then swimming, the christmas tree in the main entrance area- I always looked forward to that. All my uncles and brothers went there too, and my grandad. Wishing my retired teachers and Mr Devine a long and happy retirement.

A past pupil from way back --1950 to 56. Bro Gerard was Headmaster; Bro, Malachy taught Music (remember the Gregorian Chant?. I started of with Miss Grimley in "babies': then Miss Taggart and in Primary 1 moved to Hector Mc Donald's class and had him right through to Primary 7 . What a teacher and what an influence he had on all of us. He was the one who introduced the radio into the classroom for "Singing Together". What a new fangled idea that was --now I look here at the pictures and see all the computers!! "Old Hector" will live on in the hearts of those of us who were privileged to have him. His teaching has stayed with me through my own teaching career. Thanks St. Galls.

I attended this school from P.5 through to P7. It was an excellent school with excellent teachers, even the teachers or teacher i should say (Mr.Lecky) who i didn't get on with were all trying to do there best for us pupils. For me the highlight of the year was always the christmas pantomime where i would participate in the school choir. My favourite teacher had to be Mr. McCartan, his class was fun and he took us on school trips and taught me how to play the tin whistle.

Glory days indeed and i miss it so.

Found the website by accident and am delighted I did. My brother Joe and I attended St Galls between 1958 - 1964 or thereabouts. We lived in Iveagh Cres but couldnt get into St Pauls Primary so ended up in St Galls. Dedicated teaching staff like Bros Leopold, Killian, Gabriel, Anthony etc gave us the grounding we needed as we embarked on life. Sadly the troubles meant so many of our generation had to leave Belfast . Sad to see the school now demolished but so many happy memories.

I went to St Gall's between 1984 - 1989 when my family lived in Bombay Street. I wish I had the chance to see the school before it was knocked down. Some of the best years of my life in and around that school, especially the Friday night disco in the club next door, and the ghost stories of the old school building!!! I remember the cemented traintracks down the P5-7 yard at the back and the races we used to have up and down them. The craic in that school was brilliant. I'm almost 28 now, and don't remember a lot of names from back then, though Stephen Comerford, Billy Armstrong, Eddie Guinea, Liam Carson, Paul Lynch etc all stay fresh in my head.
I remember Mr Devine v well, he was a great headmaster. Mr Lecky, you probably wouldn't remember me, I was a quiet one in your class, you never got to sting my hands lol. Mr Murray, Ms Doyle (remember the spelling tests and the prize pencils and rubbers etc?), Ms Lowe, Miss Carton(whose sister was in the school I went to after that), Ms Culbert (who then joined the school after that as Nursery Head), and my old P1 teacher Ms Kearney.
I remember the hopscotch in the yard, and the markings on the wall, the bottled milk (before Thatcher got her way), the dinners in the big old dining room, and then doing PE in it with the ropes and ladders.
Is there ever meant to be a reunion? Wish there were some more photos of our old teachers up there. And the old uniform, I used to wear a red tie, but when I first started I had a blacknwhite one, but don't know if that was the older tie or not.
There are so many memories, keep them fresh!!!
St Gall's was the template of the best local neighbourhood school, and they don't make them like they used to anymore!!!!!
If anyone out there recognises me, drop me an email, liamlarmour@hotmail.co.uk. Used to live in 2 Bombay Street.
Best wishes to all the old teachers and pupils I encountered, you made my childhood the best!

I was a pupil between 1973 and 1980. What happened to all the old class photos that used to be ouside the Head Masters office? It would be good to see some of them on the web-site. Gerry Murray was a good spud. I hope he's enjoying a well-earned retirement. Hello to Mrs Doyle (Cavanagh if you're old enough to remember). Up P7a!

I went to St Galls 1960-1967. P1 teacher, Ms Comerford, P7 teacher Bro Benedict.
P7 was located in 2 rooms under the main stand at Casement Park because of
renovations to the school. What a way to prepare for your 11+. My 6 Uncles all went
to St Galls so I was sent too, even though I lived in Andersonstown.
My memories are all good!

I went to St.Galls for a brief period in 1966/67. We used to live in the (Old) Colligan St
and in those traffic-free days a four and a half year old could walk to school in the
company of one or two of the bigger boys, up Waterford St and past the Church with its
new car park.. The red brick entrance to the school seemed to be a hundred feet high.
Unless I am mistaken, the classroom was through a door on the left as one enters the
yard. One thing that impressed me was a miniature wooden fort at one end of the
room in which somebody had put a very large molar tooth (complete with roots ) along
with the toy soldiers. I remember us all singing 'we all live in a yellow submarine' - I
hadn't a clue what it meant but it sounded good... Our teacher was a lovely woman
whose name I have forgotten completely - does anybody know who she was? She
taught primary 1 during 1966/67 and was quite young.
We moved house in 1967 and I spent the next couple of years in St Aidan's in
Whiterock before we left the north completely.
I drove past St Galls in 2004, the last time I was in Belfast, and I was delighted
to see the school still there and mostly unchanged. I am saddened therefore to
learn of its demise. To me it will always be an emblem of innocent times, an
icon of my childhood.

I attended St Galls from 1961 - 1967 I remember many of the teachers including Miss
Stewart, Miss Nugent, Bro Anthony, Bro Eugene and Bro Benedict. My fondest memory
was winning the B league and Championsips in 1967. Great school - sadly missed.

Went to St. Galls 60 to 67. First teacher Miss Comerford. At that time Br. Leopold taught my older brother. Br Leopold then went to Keady Co. Armagh for a few years & came back as principal. He was known at that time as "the walking beanstick". He was also the man responsible for St Galls youth club up a very dark lane beside Milltown Cemetary. Out of which came both St Galls GAC& Star of the Sea basketball club. I was in St Galls when it was being renovated & the whole school moved into the changing rooms of Casement Park for a few years. It's hard to believe its now closed & neither St Galls nor Br. Leopold are with us any longer.

rod nolan
02 May 2005 00:00:00
g,day ,my full name is francis roderick nolan and
i used to live in cawnpore st, my grandfather lived
in bombay street, and i found this site by accident
while researching for a trip back to my home.
i went to st galls in the 1950s as did my brothers
i think the teachers name was dornan and another
was ms kelly what a job they had trying to teach me.
but they instilled in me a love of reading and the desire
to ask questions that has enriched my life ,i was never
the best kid in the class .a dreamer, giddy in class were
some of the kinder comments made about me,but the
teachings and moral stanards i was exposed to have
allowed me to reach for and attain goals, far beyond my
wildest dreams.times were tough in those days ,going to
school with a sugar sandwich but what the hell we had a
load of fun even if the strap was filled with coins .
my life has taken many twists and turns since leaving st galls
and thankfully i can say i have led a charmed life both in private
and business.and i can say with pride that this old boy,
WENT TO ST GALLS.cheers

I went to Saint Galls from 1964-1972 and I will
always appreciate the opportunity that the School
gave a wee boy from Belfast to make something of
himself. The names Comerford, Leopold and Killian,
I will remember fondly as teachers dedicated to their kids.
God bless as Saint Clare's.We won't forget.

Good Grief - a website for my old alma mater.
Left St G's in 1975 - Ollie Lecky?
I remember Tiger Moylan tackling him in the cow pats
of the old St Galls pitch.
I still think of my friends from there; most I haven't
seen in 30 years. I pined throughout my 7 years in
St Marys CBS, for Bro Leopold, and the rest.
Still won't forget Mrs Comerford, Miss Cuthbert -
Gerry O'Reilly - our class and Ollie's were always
playing matches against each other. Guess who
always won!! I'm sad to see the old school being
torn down, I remember my first day in school,
when the army was using it as a temporary billet,
how cool was that!!
Live in Newcsatle now, working as an accountant.

I left St Galls in 1957 and emigrated to Canada and then to America.
With the education I had received at St Galls I was able to take the
Standard Test and receive a High Scool Diploma. I have since
received a Associate Degree in Business and a Bachelor's degree
in Business Management. Thank you St Galls.I have been back this
year and visited the old school it brought back memories I didn' know
I had. St Galls will be missed because, it not only the distinction of the
De La Salle Brothers teachings but the quality of Education taught there.

Delighted to find the website.I had the priviledge
of attending st galls in three different locations
1st in the old clonard hall with Miss O Donnell then
up to Casement Park with Miss Comeford back to
waterville st with miss Comeford then Mr Monaghan
then Mr Leckey!(hands still sting but did me no harm)
then Mr (DJ.) Mc Ginley. Many happy years my family
also had the shop at the top of Waterville St until
march 1974 which served the school well and helped
set up the first tuck shop. Hope to attend any events
coming up before closure and offer my services if i
can be of any help. would love to have a last look around,
couldnt attend centenary due to my late wife's illness.
best of luck and blessings on your move.

I am a past pupil of the school and it's nice to see that the site is up and running so I can look back at the old school. The site is brilliant, as at the moment I have finished my Web Design course for ICT A-Level and it would surely pass the critiera. I liked the school when I attended and would like to come back if I decide that I would like to be a teacher for training there.
Most of all I am sad that the school is closing, to move into a new school as it will not be the same atmosphere. Say hello to all the staff there.

I am writing to ask if I could come back on a day I'm off
and help round the school. I'm doing great in my new school.
I like all my teachers and I am keeping my cool.
I have passed two I.T. test in school and in ITXP-Springvale.
As you know I was not the best at english but I am getting better.
I hope you can get time out of your busy day to read this.
When I say busy, I mean running the best school I have ever
heard off or went to. My sister wants on the computer now so I must go.
